Compare and Contrast Essay
Could you imagine being kept like an animal, forced to work as a slave, and fed hardly anything? Well Elie Wiesel and Jeanne Wakatski Houston did. They both went through a Holocaust. Elie and Jeanne both have told their stories of the horrors of living in the concentration camps. That is what this essay is going to be about, comparing and contrasting these two situations.
“The SS then condemned him to death”. (Wiesel pg. 64) The people in Elies story Night were killed without mercy. They were killed by hanging, crematoriums, gas chambers, “selection”, or by random fire. The people in Jeanne’s story “Farewell to Manzanar”, were not killed they were just forced to work. In “Farwell to Manzanar” the people were not tortured to death or beaten to death.
“After trampling over many bodies and corpses, we succeeded in getting inside”. (Wiesel pg.89) The conditions of Auschwitz were horrible. At Auschwitz the prisoners were forced into small barracks with hundreds of other people. In the story “Farwell to Manzanar” the conditions were also bad. In Jeanne’s story the people had few working bathrooms, and they often got sick.
“Food would often spoil from being left out too long.” (Huston, pg.611) The food in Jeanne’s story was often spoiled. The food they ate in her story was rice, fruit and hot cakes. The food in Elies story was often bad as well. The food that Elie ate was soup with a few potatoes in it and a stale bread crust.
In conclusion these two people, Elie and Jeanne where placed in camps that they should not have been in. Elie and Jeanne were victims of crimes that never should have happened. They were put in a place with horrible conditions. The story Night and “Farewell to Manzanar”, are alike and different in many ways. The events that happened in those cams will haunt them for the rest of their lives.
